WhereWeGo partnered with the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) to build Green Workforce Connect — a platform connecting workers to clean energy career opportunities across 10 states.
The opportunity
- Clean energy employment grew by 142,000 jobs in 2023, accounting for more than half of all new energy sector jobs
- More than 3.5 million Americans are employed in clean energy as of end-2024
- Clean energy workers earn 30% more than the national median wage
IREC has spent four decades building career pathways in weatherization, solar, and energy efficiency. WhereWeGo contributed technology expertise and worker-centered design principles. Two of WhereWeGo's co-founders bring environmental science teaching backgrounds — this work is personal.
Phase one: Weatherization careers hub
The first phase launched a dedicated hub offering job seekers interactive career tools, training provider connections, and real career narratives. Employers gained access to talent recruitment and workforce resources. The tools were rebuilt from the ground up — IREC's original career mapping tools dated back to 2013 and couldn't serve a modern mobile workforce.
Phase two: Apprenticeships
Phase two expanded to apprenticeships — structured, earn-as-you-learn opportunities in renewable energy. An interactive map helps users locate regional apprenticeships. Organizational resources support Registered Apprenticeship program development for employers ready to invest in the pipeline.
Where it stands
35,000 green energy workforce members served. 400+ green workforce organizations connected. 100+ customized resources for learning, training, and hiring. Deployed across 10 states and growing.
